Newbie Q? regarding patch

In tonight's episode, 50 YO newbie asks how do you sew the patch on the uniform?

The MHSAA patch has a red border. Do you simply use red thread through the border?

Any other hints?

I use vecro....sew-on velcro on the shirt...self adhesive on the back of the patch. The "soft" part of the velcro is on the shirt (so it doesn't snag while laundering) and coarse part on the patch. That way, the patch can be removed and used on a different shirt. Also, preparing a new patch takes all of a few seconds. I use two strips of white velcro placed on consecutive white stripes...which puts them almost at the edges of the patch.

What CR said or see your local cleaners. Most will do it for you in the $4-8 range.

The suggested technique has obviously served many here very well. However, I've discovered that every one of my newer "microsofter" shirts has at least one snag in it. I haven't conclusively identified the culprit, but it is most likely ... velcro. So now I'm shying away from velcro around my shirts whenever I can.

I have my wife put my patches on for me. Her technique is to ...
  1. Make sure she's got it in the right spot, because it's going to be permanent
  2. Iron the patch to the shirt to keep it in place temporarily
  3. Then stitch it down along the outside border using a similar color thread

Using her technique the patches stay firmly attached and are still looking good until well after the shirt needs to be replaced.

Which for me will be this season.

Stupid velcro. :(

Fortunately, there's a local cleaners owned by a buddy of mine. He has his staff do stuff like that for me at no charge. I would have asked my wife to sew that stuff on, but I value my health. :D

Usually, a cleaners can do an excellent job. It's worth the few bucks.

I've love to have them sewn on permanently and forget about them for a few years....but Oregon patches have the year on them. :(

Had a partner in Western Colorado who used the nametag magnets for his patches. real strong magnets that didn't have a problem staying on.

I use Liquid Stitch that can be bought at Wal Mart or fabric/hobby stores. It's a super-adhesive glue-like stuff. Spread it out across the back of the patch and stick it on the sleeve where you want it. Set something flat on the patch overnight to get a good hold.

When I attened college in Florida in the ancient days, I was still single and my sister and I attended the same college. She sewed my FloridaHSAA patch on my H.S. shirt and my NAGWS patch on my college shirt.

When my better half and I moved back to Toledo from Los Angeles, and I became registered in both OhioHSAA and MichiganHSAA (I have not been registered in MichiganHSAA since the girls started playing basketball in the Winter) I had my better half sew my patches on my shirts. If you have to wear patches (OhioHSAA patches are not required) I would have them sewn onto your shirts. Patches that are sewn onto the shirt look professional. I never have liked the look of a basketball shirt with a patch attached with Velcro (registered trade mark placed here).

Had one here in Nebraska/Iowa that did the same. Been thinking of going the same route.

Tried that before. I sweat quite profusely, and the chemical reaction between the Liquid Stitch and my sweat caused the Liquid Stitch to stain not only my striped shirt, but my undershirt as well. I tried cleaning it off to no avail. It ended up being a one-game experiment.

Heat'n Bond Ultra Hold Iron-On Adhesive ...

This will do the job, if you desire a permanent bond. I use it to bond American flag patches to my lab coats at work.
