OSU-OU Game
2.3 seconds left, OU with the ball under the OSU basket. Pass to Griffin at the arc on the other end, catches the ball, turns, shoots, misses, OU player attempts a tap, clock starts NOW!!! Tap misses, rebounds out to mid-court, somebody finally blows a whistle. Officials go to the monitor. Game over. Curtis Shaw was the trail and had his hand on the PTS box. Neither of the other two officials have a hnad on the box. Even if Shaw's box fails or he doesn't start the clock, the timer should start it as a backup. Anyone got the inside scoop?

I saw this play too and it would've have been a nightmare if OU's rebounded shot had gone in.
The PTS device works so all 3 officials and table-clock operator can start the clock. In the conference I work in, the table crew comes in our locker room sometime during the crew's pregame and we discuss with the clock operator about this type of situational play. Every "R" I've been with pretty much says the same thing; the trail and center should have their hand ready to push the PTS start button when the ball is legally touched on the court and the clock operator will do the same. I don't know what happened at this game but something definitely went wrong. |

Not only do we not do that, we are told that if anyone other than the administering official has his hand on the box and the game tape ends up at the state association office for any reason, those two officials will be suspended.
Clearly, neither the C or L had their hand on the box. The T and the timer should have been enough.

Your mention of the state office indicates your experience is with high schools. I'm curious as to how many high schools use these devices, as my understanding is that many high schools do not as the opportunity cost is seen as too high for the return. Regards, Jim |

My question is how would we have handled this situation in a NFHS game? It was a 3/4 length throw-in so no opportunity for B/C count, clock eventually started but then stopped with 0.8 and defensive team securing rebound.

There are close to 80 high schools in NC that use PTS.

I would hope someone would be counting.
