Injured player

The gym we played in last night as a two panels of doors separated by a way on one end of the court. The doors lead outside. Last night, a player of mine went up to block a lay up in transition, when he came down, he lost his footing, fell to the floor slid in to the door head first. The bang was loud enough you could hear his head hit the door. Now I see this happen in front of our bench. so my first thought is to run out and check on him, but i am patient waiting to be beckoned...it never happened so i just walked over to my player. In this type of situation, is it obvious that the coach needs to respond, or should I have continued to wait or...not sure what else.

You should be beckoned. But like you, I would have gone to the player in that situation, especially since he was off the floor.

Player safety first. Go to your player, just be sure that the officials know what you are doing. Just remember, if you come on the floor, the player comes out. (but I'm sure you know that . . .)

Coach, in case of an injury and we have a dead ball, I've "beckoned" you if you come on the floor. Be sure you only attend to your player though and that you don't have any commentary for me.

I would never say anything. I was waiting for some kind of eye contact..a wave, or some sign from the official. Later in the game..a kid went head first into the wall..same kind of situation, no beckoning..but because i was closer..even i went to check..nothing dirty..but chasing a loose ball.

I think Bob once, in the context of an injured player, said that when a coach comes out in emergent situations he or she is "considered beckoned." I like idea of tacit beckoning.
