You're right. For that matter, your partner should have tossed him for you when he asked for your name.

Since he didn't, you should have when he said it to you.

That's what I was thinking, though not "tossed him for you," as if it were solely or primarily your responsibility.

I was thinking in strict terms of having your back. By allowing the coach to say that about your partner, you may as well be driving the proverbial bus.
