Question How many Shots?

Can anyone provide a correct interpretation for this play:

Break away player fouled intentionally on a layup. Basket is successfull.
How many shots does he get??

I've checked all case books back '08/'09 back through "97/'98 with no examples of this play.

all intentional fouls are 2 shots on a made basket. they are also 2 or 3 shots on a missed basket.

Try the rules under penalty summary.

Two shots and the ball for all intentional fouls, except when a shooter is intentionally fouled during an unsuccessful three point attempt; then it's three.

And, the fouled team gets the ball back at the POI - which in this case would appear to be on the endline near the basket.

I am told - I own this rule from previous experience.

It's not POI, it's spot of the foul.

You're right. Thanks. They get it right there!

Now I doubly own this rule!

Under the penalty summary in R.B. 10-6, it ONLY states 2 shots for intentional fouls. It DOES NOT specify whether it was made or not.

Two sentences above, still within the summary, it does state that only ONE SHOT is awarded if the TRY IS SUCCESSFUL.

In my examle the try was successful.

This is all you need. The reason it doesn't specify is that it doesn't matter.

In the "sentences above" sentence, it is the penalty for a common foul. 10-6 penalty 4 says "Two free throws if intentional or flagrant, plus ball for throw-in". That means it's one free throw on a successful try unless the foul is intentional or flagrant, then it's two shots.

Here is the case:

4.19.3 SITUATION A: B1 is charged with an intentional foul on A1 who is in the
act of shooting: (a) a successful two-point or three-point try; (b) an unsuccessful
two-point try; or (c) an unsuccessful three-point try. RULING: In (a) and (b),
A1 is awarded two free throws. In (c), A1 is awarded three free throws. In all situations
following the free throws, Team A is awarded a throw-in at the out-of bounds
spot nearest the foul.

Intentional foul penalties:
  • no shooting motion in progress
  • 2 shots for the player fouled, or his substitute if injured + possession nearest where foul occured
  • shooting motion in progress:
  • basket good: 2 shots + possession nearest where foul occured
  • basket not good: 2-point try: 2 shots + possession nearest where foul occured
  • basket not good: 3-point try: 3 shots + possession nearest where foul occured

All you have to remember is the only time you don't shoot 2 is on an unsuccessful three point try, then it's 3 shots.

And of course that means: clear the lane. (Not mentioned so far...)
