He's talking about the difference between a screen set on the defender on ball, or a screen set on a defender off ball. Either way, it's an offensive screen.

Yep, you're probably right. I was just caught up in a flashback of a discussion I had with a fellow young official who was confused between screening principles and guarding principles.

If the screen is set in the visual field of the defender (e.g., on the side) then no space is required? Is that correct?

Correct, assuming the screened player is stationary.
