How did the myth get started?
Related thread peaked my curiousity. Anyone have any idea how the "first to touch" or "haven't established themselved on the court" myths got started?

Possibly from somebody watching too many NCAA Football or NFL games I would guess. In those rule sets, if a player steps out of bounds, they cannot be the first to touch a forward pass. What relevance does it have to basketball? Not much but who knows with some fans/coaches.

They could be the first to touch the ball depending on how they got out of bounds. By I digress.

Maybe because a dribbler in control cannot be the first to touch, possibly some officials keep the myth alive by applying the rule incorrectly.

A dribbler in control commits a violation when he steps out.

I think it might also be an NBA rule (at least under some circumstances).

And, in NCAA, if a plyaer cuts around a screen OOB, they cannot be the first to recieve a pass.
