If the player actually loses control of the ball, legal. If the player places the ball on the floor, gets up, and then grabs the ball, it is traveling.

The one weird exception to the traveling rule that does not require the player to be holding the ball to travel.

Well actually, IMO, lifting one's pivot foot prior to starting a dribble would also fall under this "exception".

We can debate it, but IMO the travel takes place when he's still holding the ball. It just takes confirming that he dribbles to make the call...

Remind me never to be locked in a confine space with you and Nevada.

IMO lifting one's pivot foot then starting a dribble should be considered an Illegal Dribble, not a Travel. But I'll save that fight for when I take over for Ed Bilik.
