If he loses control, then he can stand up. "Drops" is ambiguous: if he sets the ball in front of himself and stands up, I've got a travel, since this is not one of the things that he's allowed by rule to do after having possessed the ball while on the floor.

I agree with mbyron...but if he drops it so it is bouncing, I'm probably going to judge it a dribble, which would allow him to stand up.
