However, I am interested in your reasoning though... |

Tanner, Note: I have passed on that call, maybe, 4 times, all told. I have always been okay to call a 10 sec backcourt violation with the ball on or over the backcourt. Why it's hard for me.

One Mississippi, Two Mississippi, ...
In twenty-seven years, I've probably called it about a half-dozen times. In most of these situations, I was probably already up to ten with my visible count, waited a short time to put air in my whistle to make sure that I didn't count too fast, expected an immediate dribble across the division line, or a quick, short pass across the division line, and instead got a long pass across the division line, so I blew the whistle. I'm willing to give the offensive team the benefit of the doubt, maybe I counted too fast, but at some point the defensive team has to be rewarded for great defense, so I'm not passing on a backcourt violation that's eleven, or almost twelve seconds, in real time, just because the ball is in the air.

I have at times gotten to 10 (or 8 in FIBA) blown the whistle just as a pass is being thrown into the frontcourt.
BUT, if the pass was already in flight as I got to 10, I would pass on that call. Why grab the sh!tty end of the stick? |

You bring up a very interesting point about the count being +/- 1 second. |

How far does the pass have to be from the thrower before you don't call it? Why penalize the defense that's done their job? Why ignore the rule?
