TOTALLY OFF-TOPIC football play

Texas vs. Arizona State bowl game.

A member of the Texas sideline is being penalized for touching the ball on the field during play.
The video evidence seems to indicate that he did NOT touch it.

Crazy play.

Texas recovered the loose ball. That was negated. ASU scored a TD on the ensuing play.

The young man definitely was on the field and did reach out for the ball. He put himself in a position to be penalized.

I can't believe, unless they had another angle that wasn't shown on TV, that they reversed the call with that evidence. Wow.

That poor kid may end up like the Cubs fan a few years ago if Texas doesn't hang on to win...

Replay clearly shows he didn't touch the ball. However, he, and a lot of other members of the team were on the field and very wrong.....

Absolutely, and that is the point I was making in my second post.
However, I'm too am stunned with the conclusion of the video replay official.

What is absurd is that he reached out for the ball! Why? Wouldn't instinct be to get out of the way?

This is so wrong of me, but I'm hoping that ASU comes back and wins.

It appeared he was hardly the only person on the Texas sideline feeling that way...first reaction was that it was an incomplete pass and grounding....

The replay official may of had more than one camera angle than what the viewers had.

Not sure what the NCAA ruling is (did they get it right) but I'll take a stab at the NF ruling...asuming the officials for a HS game saw the play live:

Ball becomes dead when touched by a person out of bounds. Foul for Illegal Participation on B. A's ball half the distance to the goal from previous spot replay the down.

Is it illegal participation when a coach touches a ball? It seems it would be correct if it were a player, but a coach/staff?

I'm sure that's why it was unsportsmanlike in this game according to NCAA rules, but really don't know about NFHS...

Wow. The kid is Mack Brown's step-son. He may live after all. Or, he may cause a divorce...

According to the NCAA rules which I just downloaded, it might not have mattered whether the guy touched the ball and it's too bad the on-air talent didn't discuss the question:

FR-124 RULE 9.2 / CONDUCT OF PLAYERS AND OTHERS SUBJECT TO RULES
be disqualified [S47]. If a player or an identified squad
member in uniform commits two unsportsmanlike fouls in
the same game, he shall be disqualified.

b. Other prohibited acts include:
1. During the game, coaches, substitutes and authorized attendants in
the team area shall not be on the field of play or outside the 25-yard
lines without permission from the referee unless legally entering or
leaving the field (Exceptions: Rules 1-2-4-g and 3-3-8-c). Team area
personnel who are outside the team area and who have involvement
or impact on live-ball play are subject to penalty under Rule 9-1-4-
a....[omitted stuff]

PENALTY—Dead-ball foul. 15 yards [S7, S27] from the succeeding
spot. Flagrant offenders, if players or substitutes, shall be
disqualified [S47].

To me this doesn't make it clear which team would have had possession after enforcement of the penalty.

Let's not forget that not long before this Texas was given a sideline warning for having coaches and personnel out on the field at other times also. So the kid and Texas deserved that penalty...didn't seem to help ASU out in the long run.
