Does anyone do 3 whistle for sub-varsity...

...that's not part of a JV/Varsity (or similar) double header? Just wondering as I think I glossed over a comment from someone about all their work now being 3 whistle.

3-man

michigan just started girls/boys in the same season...so we are being assigned 3-man for fresh/jv or jv/v to get us adjusted to 3-man officiating. not all leagues are adopting this but it is becoming more and more common.

All sanctioned games (MS through V) are 3-man in my part of South Carolina. Not sure if that's true everywhere in the state.

Here in Eastern Washington...all H.S. boys levels are 3-whistle. (Frosh., Soph., JV, and Varsity)
I don't officiate girls basketball...but, I think they only do 3-whistle for JV and Varsity.

The first year we started doing 3-whistle...we even did Middle School 3-whistle, to gain experience. We just split the 2 Person pay 3 ways.

We generally only do three-whistle for jv games on occasion. It's nice to be able to do it, but I don't think we have enough officials to make it a regular practice.

Yes, when we do it, we split the 2 person pay three ways.

The only time we might work a 3 Person for any lower level game is when it is apart of a varsity/JV doubleheader. It is just not something that is done on purpose. It probably should be that way, but it is not.

Peace

here in KS, all V games are 3 person and have been since i started doing v 3 years ago, maybe 1/4 of frosh and jv are 3 person and i know of two area middle schools that do 3 person. the middle school 3 person crews pay $75 per official for 2 games and the jv/frosh 3 person in the town i'm from pays $120 for three games. not bad for an evenings work and some 3 person experience!

NV uses 3-man only at the varsity level. All JV and Frosh games are 2.

In our section in Northern California they still use 2 man for Varsity. That is till they are pretty deep in the playoffs then they go 3 man.......So obviously our lower levels are 2 man.

In Central Virginia, in all of our public schools, both JV and Varsity are 3-man. In our private schools, most JV are also 3-man...but we do have some JV and Varsity that are only 2-man.

How much do you get paid per game? I'm surprised 3 person for Frosh, Soph and JV. I think it's great.

Local decision

We (our local association) made a decision 3 years ago to work 3 person for all sub-varsity games provided we have officials available. We split 2 person pay.

Our reasoning was that we spent a lot of time and effort getting an official ready for a varsity contest and THEN we subjected him to 3 person with very little exposure to 3 person. Most of the time, the feedback was that they were not ready. Of course, the trainee countered with "where am I supposed to get exposure to 3 man".

Anyway, we longer teach 2 person mechanics.
