First varsity three man...
Third year official, assigned a fairly high level game. Two rival teams (12 miles apart) seperate leagues, both in first in their respective leagues. Any advice? Yes I tuck my whistle when I pee...

Today, I have my first varisty 3-man game as well. Good luck. Just remember to watch your primary, good communication with partners and have a patient whistle as lead.

Resist the urge to call "across the lane" as the Lead. In 2-person, you have to call plays on the opposite side of the lane. But in 3-person, you have a C over there and you need to let him/her call the far side of the lane and the far block.
Rotate as the Lead!!! Don't get stuck wide. I would always rather rotate a little too much than not enough. If you have to come back, no big deal; but don't make your C officiate the ball AND the post. Be patient with your signals from the T and C. Even if it's clearly your call, sometimes the Lead will whistle and signal (those old 2-person habits!). To avoid conflicting calls, just hold your fist up for a second instead of going right to a block or charge signal. Enjoy. |

If you did not work the game already, then the best advice I can give you is to review the basics on 3 man mechanics. Watch your primary strong first. If you are the C and nothing is going on in your area, you can make calls if it is clear that your partners did not see a play clearly. Have a good long pre-game so that all subjective issues are addressed and just have fun.
Peace

Relax
Relax.
That's my best advice. It just another game. It will be a bit faster, a bit higher ( maybe above the rim ), but really, you have less calls ( 3 officials not 2 ) Don't look for calls, they will come to you. watch for rotations. Don't force the game . And really, have fun. |
