Ref in Stands

During a match-up of our top 2 teams in league play (HS varsity game). I was in the stands as a spectator when a local college division 1 official (spectator also) just rode our 2 guys on the floor the whole game. He screamed at them on what to call, what to look for, etc...The fans around him fueled off him the whole game. As an official I was embarassed at his antics. I thought you never criticized a fellow official, especially during a game. I thought the guys did a great job. Any thoughts?

What level is this guy a D1 Official, Women's or Men's ball? And what kind of varsity ball was it, Girl's or Boy's ball?

Well respected mens D1 official. Boys varsity 4A game.

Well I bet that if you exposed this "well respected" D1 Men's Official, he might not be very well respected. His behavior is not professional in any way. He of all people should know better.

If he still works any high school ball at all, he should be reported to the local association.

As usual BktballRef is right on the money...report this @sshole! (Well, maybe he didn't use such "colorful" lanuage)

As a RookieDude I appreciate any comments a seasoned veteran can give me. However, I would appreciate the veteran to save the comments for half-time or after the game in the privacy of our locker room. Any official that would sit in the stands and berate a fellow brother, out loud or otherwise, needs to have his head examined.

We are supposedly a tight fraternity of men and women working hard at what we do. We don't have many friends out there in the stands, and to have a fellow official sit there with the other screaming idiots...what's a guy to do?

Can you imagine a biker gang (official's association), for example, have a fellow biker guy cut down one of his gang memebers (official) to a rival gang (fans in the stand).

This guy wouldn't last long in his "gang".

I vote for a similar punishment for this "highly respected" Div 1 official.

This ref in question does not do any high school games. He is well respected amongst his peers at D1, not local association. He is a local guy and some people thinks he walks on water because he is a D1 ref. How about a note to his D1 supervisor about his antics.

If he's in your association then report him & file a formal
grievance if you have such a process, then follow up
with a strong letter & report to his D1 supervisor(s).
If he's not in your association then a formal grievance
might not be appropriate, but do send a formal
report to his D1 sups. In any case this should be handled
through your association leadership (grievance commitee
and exec board). Don't be surprised if all you get for
your trouble is a letter of apology, but don't let that
stop you. This guys behavior was just wrong, game security
should have been told to escort him out of the building.

mega dittos, It's tough enough when you have idiots in the stands, but fellow refs?

What difference does it make if the guy works men's or women's D-I??? Or if it was a boys or girls game?? His behavior was wrong and he did it just to draw attention to himself...probably not much you can do about it since the D-I supervisor probably is too busy to care...

Just get the word out to his fellow officials and i would also call him and let him know how i felt and i will be telling his partners and supervisor. Don't think for one minute the supervisor won't have something to say about it. Most supervisors were or are officials.

Two suggestions. Next time he does this, sit right next to him and yell out stuff exactly the opposite of what he does. If he yells, "bad call", you yell, "great call", etc.

Second suggestion - go to one of his games, wear your ref shirt and yell all game at him and see how he likes it.

OK, OK, don't do either - but wouldn't it be fun?

There is no excuse for a jackass like that. It's surprising that he ever became a D-1 official w/ such poor judgment! Have your referee organization write a letter to him and CC: his assignor on how unacceptable his behavior is (that would have more weight than just a letter from an individual). Let us know what the outcome is...to tar and feather him would be too tame.

It might explain the mentality of the official and the contest that he was watching.
