Strictly speaking what Rut wrote is not correct, but he does have the gist of it correct. He is not 100% right because the ball does not have to pass all the way through the net to be a successful goal, it could also just remain in the basket. However, if it does neither, then no goal has been scored.

5-1-1 . . . A goal is made when a live ball enters the basket from above and remains in or passes through.
