Like the good FG try by the Browns in the Cle/Balt NFL game ... same as a good try in hoop, correct or not? Ball goes through cylinder but does not clear the nest and for some reasons snaps back up and out of the hoop - good bucket or not?

Football rules are different. The ball must go completely through the net before considering a good goal. In football the ball just has to past through the uprights to be completed no matter what it hits behind the posts.

Strictly speaking what Rut wrote is not correct, but he does have the gist of it correct. He is not 100% right because the ball does not have to pass all the way through the net to be a successful goal, it could also just remain in the basket. However, if it does neither, then no goal has been scored.

Alright... Scenario from a youth league game (the coach of Team A is also the high school varsity coach at a nearby school).

A3 obtains the rebound from a missed attempt. On A3's attempt for a goal, the ball goes through the bottom of of the basket, hits the backboard, and then bounces around the rim before passing through the basket from above. Good basket or not? What is your explanation to the coach if the basket is no good, since, in all respect, the ball did enter the basket from above.

I told him that the basket was not good, and that he should know that, as it was a violation for the ball to enter from below, regardless if it then fell through from above. He didn't buy my explanation. Anyways, thanks for the rules reference, I was just overlooking that.

Minor point, but I'd argue that the basket is still no good. We do, however, award points for the violation.

Just explain that it's a violation for the ball to go up through the bottom, and once that happens the ball is dead and a goal cannot be scored.

That's the key. The violation makes the ball dead. Once that happens, one no longer has a LIVE ball entering the basket from above. Rather one has a dead ball doing that.

6-7-9 The ball becomes dead, or remains dead, when:
. . . A violation, as in 9-2 through 13, occurs (see exception d below).

9-4 A player shall not travel with the ball, as in 4-44, intentionally kick it, as in 4-29, strike it with the fist or cause it to enter and pass through the basket from below.
PENALTY:The ball is dead when the violation occurs and is awarded to the opponents for a throw-in from the designated out-of-bounds spot nearest the violation.
