This is not good game management !
I dont know why officials think overtime is so taboo......I my mind if it happens, so be it. I have no problem with overtime at all. Just my 2 cents.

A couple of seasons ago, one of the varsity officials took ill. Since it was a crew of two, they asked if I could fill in for the 2nd half. The visitors trailed much of the game and made a baseline 15 footer at the buzzer to send the game into OT. So, I got an extra 4 minutes in that night.

I think a lot of officials say this in jest. In reality this is out of our control most of the time and even if we call a foul and put someone on the line, they still have to perform. I am not taking responsibility for a team not defending a wide open shot that takes the game into overtime.

Peace

I think the rule about no overtimes should be modified slightly, "no overtime for JV games." This is especially important on nights when working a double header at two different locations.

Now I must admit that I learned the hard way. My 1st year, 1st game of the year, I was on a JV game that went to double OT. That was when I heard this phrase, "that's going into your evaluation."

For me and most every official I know, I think that no overtimes is just said tongue in check and they don't mean it. However there are some referees that I know of that really believe and act on it, but that's on them in the end.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? "that's going into your evaluation"? Anyone who says that needs their head examined, unless they meant it in jest. I had a partner who told me that once, and I asked if he was kidding me, and he said no, it showed up on his evaluation the year before. I had to look at him funny like he was bs'ing me. He gave me the "no, I'm serious" look. Out of curiosity, I called one of the evaluators later (gutsy move on my part) and he confirmed that ONE of the evalutors did make that comment on some of the guys, which also was the only year that person was an evaluator. The evaluator I talked to told me if you ever have a partner who says to try to avoid overtime, to call him back and let him know. Tough gun this evaluator is!

Nobody let him in on the humor [if FIBA - humour], it would seem.
Or as *they* say, "He just don't git it."

My first varsity game in my new association last year was delayed by a JV girls game that went double OT.

We took 5 officials to this game, two for each JV game. Each pair then worked one varsity game with the 5th official. My partner and I had the girls JV game in the small gym while the boys JV game was played upstairs. At half-time, we walked by the boys game and they had three minutes to go in the 2nd quarter.

With four minutes left in our 4th quarter, the score got tied. No one scored the rest of the quarter. No one scored for the entire first overtime. Visiting team pulled off the win in the 2nd overtime in a shoot out, outscoring the home team 6-4 to win 24-22.

Neither team scored at all in the first overtime? In this case, the "O" word is "ouch"!
