I responded the way that I did because, as you wrote, it doesn't make any difference whether the ball contacts the backboard or not, except in the NBA. The play is perfectly legal in HS and college either way.

I figured that giving the OP the exact rules, which he could read and interpret for himself was the best way to go. IOW, I was hopeful that given the proper information, he could answer his own question.
