Nevadaref quoted you the correct rules but I think he thought you asked what happens if the ball doesn't hit the backboard. The answer is the same whether it does or doesn't hit the backboard (NF and NCAA). Once the try is attempted, there is no team control and it is a "free" ball for anyone, including the original shooter, to get.
