over & back?

A1 has control in the frontcourt. B1 slaps the ball out of A1 hands and the ball hits A1's foot and goes into the backcourt. A1 is the first to touch the ball again in the backcourt--would this be a over and back? Thanks.

Yes ... last to touch, first to touch. Control was not lost because of a defender slapping the ball. When you make this call get ready to here from all they don't like it when you call it.

Excuse me! I don't think so! This is not an over and back violation.

Maybe in your rec league games it isn't a violation. In real basketball it is.

In your response as to why, please use the words/phrases "team control" and "last to touch" and "first to touch."

Thank you.

If this isn't over the back, then you have a kick ball(most likely not). Team B's Ball

Never on this play. Kicks have to be intentional to be a violation.

I've got a violation in my game.

The only rules set where it isn't a violation is in some fantasy league.

Old School:

Please tell me why this is not a backcourt violation? Before you answer my question, let me quote the NFHS Rules and Case Books.

NFHS R9-S9-A1: A player shall not be the first to touch a ball after it has been in team control in the frontcourt, if he/she or a teammate last touched or was touched by the ball in the frontcourt before it went to the backcourt.

Also read NFHS Casebook Play 9.9.1 SITUATION C: A1 is dribbling in his/her backcourt and throws a pass to the frontcourt. While standing in A's frontcourt: (a) A2 touches the ball and deflects it back to A's backcourt. A2 recovers [the ball] in the backcourt. RULING: In (a), it is a violation. The ball was in control of Team A, and a player from A was the last to touch the ball in the frontcourt and a player of A was the first to touch it after it returned to the back court.

I cannot speak for the NBA/WNBA rules, but the ruling is the same as the NFHS rules for a game played under NCAA and FIBA rules.
