over & back?
A1 has control in the frontcourt. B1 slaps the ball out of A1 hands and the ball hits A1's foot and goes into the backcourt. A1 is the first to touch the ball again in the backcourt--would this be a over and back? Thanks.

Old School: Please tell me why this is not a backcourt violation? Before you answer my question, let me quote the NFHS Rules and Case Books. NFHS R9-S9-A1: A player shall not be the first to touch a ball after it has been in team control in the frontcourt, if he/she or a teammate last touched or was touched by the ball in the frontcourt before it went to the backcourt. Also read NFHS Casebook Play 9.9.1 SITUATION C: A1 is dribbling in his/her backcourt and throws a pass to the frontcourt. While standing in A's frontcourt: (a) A2 touches the ball and deflects it back to A's backcourt. A2 recovers [the ball] in the backcourt. RULING: In (a), it is a violation. The ball was in control of Team A, and a player from A was the last to touch the ball in the frontcourt and a player of A was the first to touch it after it returned to the back court. I cannot speak for the NBA/WNBA rules, but the ruling is the same as the NFHS rules for a game played under NCAA and FIBA rules. MTD, Sr.

The Mark's have it....this is a backcourt violation. Never a kick ball unless intentional.
Along with the rule reference Denucci quoted, we also need to clarify what constitutes team control: (ncaa) Art. 2. A team shall be in control when: a. A player of the team is in control; b. While a live ball is being passed between teammates; or c. When a player of that team has disposal of the ball for a throw-in. Art. 3. Team control shall continue until the ball is in flight during a try for goal, an opponent secures control or the ball becomes dead. BR-69 Art. 4. There shall be no team control during: a. A jump ball; b. The tapping of a rebound (unless it is a try for goal); c. A try for goal after the ball is in flight; d. The period that follows any of these acts (a-c) while the ball is being batted (from the vicinity of other players) in an attempt to secure control; e. A dead ball. Art. 5. Team control is re-established in Article 4 of this Rule when a player secures control. Art. 6. “Control” for purposes of establishing the alternating-possession procedure occurs when: a. A player is in control; b. The ball is handed/bounced to or placed at the disposal of the freethrower after a common foul or placed at the disposal of a throwerin. |
