If you didn't hear the whistle, then you could ask one of the many people who heard it.
Secondly, just because it didn't happen that way doesn't mean it's not relevant. If he blows his whistle but it bounds up in the air for 5 seconds, do we call the game over? The whistle must cause the 'manual' timing to end. I don't see how you can time beyond that whistle.
