I know it's not the NCAA tourney...but during the broadcast of a quaterfinal game in the Illinois State High School Assoc. tourney, the color man said the following....."the Marshall coach has made a really smart decision to stay in the 'triangle and 3' defense".....since the coach figured out how to play w/ 6 defenders on the floor, I'd say he really is pretty smart...

If this really happened...do you officials think this is something that is appropriate.

The reason I ask is...a few years ago, I was officiating at a State Tournament in Tacoma, WA. As I was walking by our local radio guy, he asked me if I wanted to do the game with him. He had an extra pair of headsets and was handing them to me. I just laughed and said, "no thanks...I better not."

It just didn't feel right. Possibly commenting/critiquing teams that I may be officiating later in the tournament.

Comments?

Dude, normal rules don't apply to Jon Diebler.

It's true, it's true.......

Don't believe everything you read about Diebler. It's hard to separate the myth from the man.
Not that he didn't earn the myth with very hard work and high talent.

Interesting!!! This happened just this year to a female official I know. She no longer works HS ball but was at the tournament to watch. The radio guy asked her to hop on for the broadcast. She accepted, but of course she was not going to work later in the tournament.

In your spot, Rook, I agree with your decision.

Back in Des Moines there are a couple of Major League Baseball umpires who do a radio show in the off season, "Ump's Eye View." Granted, they aren't doing play-by-play, but it wasn't uncommon for them to prognosticate on who they thought would be the better teams. They would also get a few players to come on as guests. My understanding was they had cleared the show through MLB, but I always wondered whether anyone thought there might be a conflict of interest (or appearance of one) with the guys making predictions on how the season would go.
