behind the backboard shot

Can you shoot the ball from behind the backboard and have it count in FED? And did the Larry Bird shot you see frequently on NBA bloopers from way behind the backboard count back in the 80's?

No and no.

It's a violation if the ball passes over a rectangular back board from the front or behind.

If you watch the replay closely, you will see the Lead immediately waving off the shot.

Yes to the first question, however the ball cannot go over the top of the backboard.

To the second question, now days I usually only pay attention to basketball, therefore I wouldn't know the answer.

edit for spelling error

Few people know that Larry Bird accomplished this feat in the Hartford, CT Civic Center. Many years ago the Boston Celtics used to play a few of their "home" games in Hartford.

Actually if you are using antiquated (sp?) fan shaped backboards and the ball passes over the top - it's OK.

I was not in Vegas but have a chance to get 2 free tickets to hit the Nascar race there in 2 weeks. Is it worth it?

Hence JR specifying a rectangular backboard in the very first response.

If you like seeing cars slipping and sliding over a dirt covered track.

When I lived in Vegas I worked security part-time and I worked the luxury boxes for the very first race there, it was a Busch Series race. I wouldn't let the Budweiser girl in a luxury suite. She didn't have the proper pass and she never did anything for me.

But I digress.

I thusly put this in for any young cherub-like officials that might not realize the rule was different for a fan-shaped board.
