I'm glad you didn't let him sucker you in. You would have been in a no-win situation.

I do have a friend that is still an official but runs the official scorebook for the school his daughter graduated from (she is playing a D1 program now) when he is in town and not officiating. He would tell the coach in so many words when to not complain because the official knew what they were talking about. I also know they would talk often about calls and situation. It did help the coach out and he would realize when to let something go. Now I am not suggesting you do that, but it is not a first to have some advice from a coach. I do not know if you should sit on the bench, but I would not have a problem with talking to a coach every now and then if I am not going to work their games.

Peace

I'm disappointed in you my young friend.

You can charge him a game fee and just say "they got it right" whenever he comes to you with a question. If they didn't get it right you just say you didn't see the play.

And use your time on the bench productively...like talking up that cute cheerleader you've had your eye on... "yeah, I'm like a consultant to the coach. He needs me here to help him out with the rules. But I'm sure I'm not getting paid as much as you are...what's that? You don't get paid?...oh. Anyway, what are you doing later?"
