I was working with a good partner tonight, we've worked together before only a few times.
Front court throw-in, table side, near mid court. I'm lead (2-man). As I normally do, I cross to strong side for the throw-in and turn back about 45 degrees to the lane to see if anything is gonna happen on that side and when nothing happens I wander back across the lane. This time the throw was deep to strong side and all of a sudden, I've got the ball and six players in my lap. I'm still looking at the lane as the ball starts toward the paint. I see my partner bailing out and going across the top (opposite) so I back out toward the sideline to get a better look at the action. I'm thinking, "That's cool he gave it up to me cuz I'm only 6' from the play, and he's gonna go watch the lane from the top." It was a good flex! In the showers he mentioned how confused he was when he noticed that we were both on the same side, so he just went to the other side. I had to explain to him how smart we were. He agreed. mick |

I'm confused

I'm having a hard time visualizing you as the Lead official in the frontcourt, administering a throw-in near midcourt. What was the situation there? Chuck |

I'm always confused. Dan's right. I was just Lead and watching what was going on. mick |

He's got 2-3 times more experience than I and is a solid official. This was his first game this year. Maybe that had something to do with the confusion. Maybe his regular partner never crosses over. This was just meant to be a "Hoops" story, nothing more. mick |

I'm not confused anymore!!

Trail cross-over during live ball
Sounds like it worked for you two, however we train our people to never cross over as trail during a live ball. Since this official had a great deal of experience he was probably reverting to previously recognized mechanics which obviously worked in this case- but definitely a must for the pre-game if you are going to do it. Not something you want to do too often especially with less experienced officials.

what did I miss here? When a lead goes strong side there is two refs on the same side of the floor. There is absolutuely nothing wrong with that. There is nothing anywhere that I have found that says that the floor has to be balanced. The NF mechanics manual has pictures showing both officials on the same side of the floor. Primary and secondary coverage does not change. The ball and six players ended up on top of you and you have the ball (I am assuming ball was below FT line and inside the arc) It's your call and your partner has off ball. He can call the off ball, perimeter, and weakside stuff from where he is at. He would have looked awfully stupid if there had been a quick steal and he is in the middle of the floor trying to move across when the team is trying to race the other way. The reason you went to the strong side was that there is the potential that a ball would go low on the strong side, you were there to call it. Instead of your partner calling from lead 25 ft away or you across the paint 15 ft away trying to look through bodies. I think he messed up, just because he has more experience does not mean that he knows what he is doing. I have worked with "experienced officials" and wonder if they had spent the last 3 days in the donut store because their eyes were so glazed. |

Good points.

We don't teach that mechanic, although I have heard it is used in some parts of the country. Our modus operandi is when Lead crosses, he's just going to help, he still has the "other sideline, and if the ball reverses, then it's Lead's responsibility to remember how he got over there. This is all very good stuff that you bring up, but I think, maybe, my partner just isn't used to having help over there, or he just cramped a little..., and the whole thing was laughable. Thanks. mick |

I once got burned as Lead crossing over on a high throw-in like this. The throw-in came toward the paint right in front of me. (Perfect so far!) Hwoever, it was just out of control range, so the player batted the ball back in bounds toward the other side. Her momentum carried her off the end of the court, sealing me to what just became the weak side. Two players, unfortunately one from each team, raced toward the ball that was flying toward the far, unofficiated sideline. They got to the ball at basically the same time, both touched it in some unknown order, and the ball went OOB on the previously identified unofficiated sideline. The coaches didn't seem to understand....
I still cross over on those inbounds, but I sure hope the offense controls things properly. |
