I have a question about when a technical foul is given for delay of game.
Rule 10-3-7 lists certain delay of game acts such as preventing the ball from being made live promptly or from being put in play, etc.. Then in Rule 9-2-11 it gives the throw-in delay for the defender breaking the throw-in boundary-line plane. My question is, does each type of delay violation receive a warning before a technical foul is called, or is only one warning given for delay of game and then the next instance, even if it is a different type of delay, receives a technical? |

Warnings
Each team is allowed to receive one warning for each type of delay. So the team could delay 3 different ways and still not receive a T. In fact, both teams could delay 3 different ways each (wow, is that even close to being grammatically correct?) and still not receive a single T. Never seen that happen, tho.
6 warnings and no T's. That's be something. Chuck |

Not all delays require a warning.
Note that the Rule 10-3-7d should read "Repeated violations of the throw-in, as in 9-2-11, 12" (it currently reads 9-2-9, 10, which is incorrect). That is, if an opponent of the thrower-in is reaching over the plane, or a teammate of the thrower-in is OOB, a warning is issued. However, for other delays, such as those mentioned in 10-3-7a, b, and c, no warning is required nor authorized. See case 10.3.7 for a specific delay play and ruling. |

Delays
Brad's right. Some delays are penalized immediately; like the free thrower not being in the circle when the official is ready to administer. I should have been more specific in my earlier post. There are 3 types of delay warnings that may be given to a team. They are:
1) Defender breaks the plane of the throw-in; 2) Teammates delay free throw administration by huddling; 3) Defender holds ball after a made basket. Each of these violations carries a warning first, and then penalty. So a team could get a warning for each (3 total) before it is assessed a T. Hope that's clearer. Sorry for any confusion I caused. These warnings apply to the NFHS rules. NCAA 10-3-1c states
"Repeatedly delaying the game..." but there isn't a by-rule method for dealing with the 3 types of delay as in the NF rules. Interesting that NCAA 10-3-1d has a warning for failure to "clean up" after a time out: "Failing to remove chairs/stools immediately after the warning signal of any timeout and to complete cleanup before the final horn signals the resumption of play. 1. One warning shall be given to a team that fails to comply, an indirect technical foul shall be assessed thereafter." (This is taken from the 2001 book) |
