They don't actually have to "hold" the ball as described in example #3. If they prevent the offense from promptly being able to put the ball in play, they get the warning. This could range anywhere from actually holding the ball, tapping it away or (and, believe it or not, I actually saw this once), continually moving between the new inbounder and the ball so the new inbounder couldn't get to the ball. However, in that particular instance, my partner ruled that was "unsportsmanlike conduct" and issued the T immediately. I think it was a good call.
