Game Management

I worked my first AAU game yesterday and had a ton of fun. I was really nervous because 1) it was my first REAL game 2) I was working with my boss. Anyway, he told me my mechanics were great and my game management was good. I dont think good is good enough, and I am confused. What exactly is game management. How do you improve game mangement? thanks guys
Travis

Game management means a lot of things. Basically it means how you manage people, your calls and the way the game is being played. For example if a player is getting goofy, your game management skills would be the able to calm that player down or to know how to appropriately handle them. Also sometimes people consider game management as what calls you might make at certain parts of the game. For example what you call early in the game as compared to what you might call late in the game.

Peace

It would also include how you carry yourself. If you make the right call but don't look sure of yourself, that's an example of weak game management. If you look lost on the court like you've never seen a three-point line before, that's weak game management. Coaches and players who see this will then try to control you and the game. If you don't look like you're in control, they will try to fill the void. It only gets ugly from there.

From my time lurking and observing here, I'd say that a broad defintiion of game management would be: "knowing your stuff, and actively demonstrating you know your stuff". Othjer posters have gone into more detail as to examples.

Another example might be knowing when to warn a player for throwing the ball at the floor in digust (CYO) versus giving the Big T (HS and above).
