And say bye-bye to your buddy Gary Sheffield.

Gotta admit, it makes them look better. I don't really know much about Lidle. What I do know about him doesn't make him seem all that impressive. But I guess they can use all the help they can get on the pitching staff.

Mets sweep in Atlanta (3 or more games) for the first time since '85. Cubs sweep Cards (4 games) for first time since '72. Wow.

I think I heard someone say Abreu is set to get $15 million next year......not that it matters to the Yankees.

Yup, Abreu has a contract for $15 mil next year. Gary Sheffield is in the last guaranteed year of his contract though, and the Yanks have an option on him next year for $13 mil. Both play right field. If they let Sheffield walk, the difference is only $2 mil, plus a $2 mil buy-out of Sheffield's contact. Iow, it's really only costing the Yankees $4 mil from standing pat for next year to getting Abreu- if they do get rid of Sheffield.

The Yanks can also bring Sheffield back as a DH too next year and maybe see if he can play a little 1B. Giambi should be a full time DH. He sucks at 1B. Terrible defensively.

Maddux gets traded to the Dodgers for a shortstop recovering from an injury?

...grumble...grumble...

It's enough to make a Cub fan want to commit Harry Carey.

Exactly.

The only good thing about today is I got to walk around with a wisk broom in my shirt pocket. I didn't have to say a word to any of the Cardinal fans in the office; they knew exactly what it represented. First time since 1972 have the Cubs swept the Cards in a 4-game series.

"Is that a broom in your pocket, or are you just happy to see the Cardinals lose?"

amazing

I'm not much into baseball. I got my satisfaction when I was 16 years old watching Tim McGraw's daddy finishing off the Royals in October 1980 and my last hearbreak watching Joe Carter skip around the bases in 1993.

But Big Papi is ridiculous. He makes you sit and watch, just like I would watch Barry Sanders or Randy Moss in football. And he's clutch like MJ or Kobe in basketball.

Oh well, that will be my one baseball comment for the season. 38 days until Miami @ Pittsburgh.

"Touch 'em all, Joe." Ah yes, the glory time for the Jays.

93 was fun cuz the Jays won the WS and the Habs won the SC.

Doubly bad news for the Red Sox today:
1. Varitek out 4-6 weeks with cartilage damage in his knee.

2. Cleveland 6, Boston 3; NYY 5, Toronto 1

AL EAST Standings:
1. NYY 62 - 41 .602
2. Boston 63 - 42 .600
