MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Francisco Liriano and the Minnesota Twins were afraid of this: His left elbow needs major surgery, and the pitching sensation is expected to miss the 2007 season. Liriano found out Friday that he requires Tommy John surgery, a ligament transplant procedure that usually takes at least a year to recover from.

Too late; he's already on the shelf.

He needed to be traded to the Cubs before the diagnosis.

Oh, and btw: :p

WOW, post a negative remark about the Cubs and in just five minutes M&M is firing back! ;)

What do you get a special email notification everytime someone on the forum mentions the Cubs? :)

A little off the off-topic, but...

..does Mick lock this thread at midnight on 12/31, so that Chuck can start the NEW annual thread at 12:01 a.m. on 1/1? [After he has walked the dog, of course!]

It's just that "feeling" I get.

It's just like the feeling you get, right before you throw up...

Couple of interesting stories out there today.

Rangers hire Ron Washington as their new manager. He was the A's 3rd base coach, and I don't think he has any managerial experience, even in the minors. Should be interesting, since the Rangers are already guaranteed to win the World Series next year.

Yanks pick up Sheff's option, but are already talking to about 7 teams about a trade for him.

And Pedro's already talking about retirement if this rehab doesn't go well. I hope it doesn't come to that.

Speaking of that......

Didya read the story about Sammy Sosa wanting to come back and play in '07?

Hmmmm......musta found himself a new pharmacist.

Either that or he's too old for the Tour de France.

Today's <b>question</b> is .....<i>"What year did the Tour de France start?"</i>

Yo, Mick......

You got Sheffield; we got 3 young pitching prospects.

Sounds good to me.

I guess Sheff, Leyland and Dombrowski have history.

It's not a trade that I would make, if I were the Tiger's GM.

Let's see an overpriced, overage, injury-prone hitter or three young arms...hmmm:eek:

Are they trying to help the Yankees? Do they feel sorry for them after this past season?

Must be a very good trade, cuz Dombrowski made it. Lotsa good, young arms on the roster already, and they all wanna be one of the five starters.
Sheff is a better DH than Dmitri Young. and the Tigers have been looking for one all summer.
Mr. Illich just has to sell a few more pizzas.

The BoSox pay $51 mil just to negotiate with the Japanese pitcher. To sign him, they're probably looking at least at about $12 mil a year for about 4 years, just to keep Boras happy. Iow, you're looking at paying out around $100mil for 4 years, or about $25mil a year. All that for for a guy that's never pitched an inning in the Bigs. That's A-Rod money, and we all know how that turned out. The voice of fiscal responsibility, the Yankees, bid about $20mil less btw.

And in other news, the Cubbies re-signed Kerry Wood and immediately placed him on the 365-day DL.
