WARNING!! Annual Off-Topic Baseball Thread. Esteemed Members BEWARE!!

OPENING DAY!!!

Schilling looks great, with a healthy ankle for the first time in 2 years. Sox rough up Millwood. Veritek drives in the first 2 runs of the season. And Ortiz hits one off the fair pole!

Yanks crush the A's, with help from ARod's grand salami.

Cardinals rang up 17 hits and 13 runs against the Phils and look like they have the NL Central wrapped up already; if they can hold off the Cubs, who pounded out 18 hits and scored 16 runs against Cincy.

The Mets and Nationals each had a World Series MVP as their Opening Day starter.

Mick's riding high with yet another Tigers' win on Opening Day.

DJ's riding low with yet another M's Opening Day loss.

Orioles hit 4 homers to beat up on the Devil Rays.

And there was a thriller in Colorado, as the Rockies scored in the bottom of the 11th to escape with a 3-2 win against Arizona. (This makes the Rockies the first team in 30 years to record "walk-off" Opening Day wins in consecutive seasons. The last team to do it was the Reds of the mid-70's.)

Almost any of these games was better than the FL/UCLA game last night. :) Hooray for baseball season!!!

M&M Guy Tue Apr 04, 2006 08:46am

First of all, thank you Chuck.

Second, this was at the end of the article recaping the President's visit to Cincinnati to throw out the first pitch:

Before the game, Bush visited the Reds' clubhouse and shook hands with each player in front of his locker. He received a black bat from Ken Griffey Jr., who patted the president on the back of his right shoulder.

Then, he was off to visit the Cubs for another quick go-around. As Bush entered the clubhouse of a team that hasn't won the World Series since 1908, he said, "So, this is the year, right?"

So far.

jkjenning Tue Apr 04, 2006 08:46am

I already learned what will happen this year in baseball, so no need to watch it: :)

Thanks for the recap Chuck. Last week, as the loyal Cubs fan I am, I left my college roommate (also a Cubs fan) the following voicemail;
Flowers are coming up, grass is turning green, spring training is almost over, Wood and Prior are on the DL. Baseball season is officially here.

I was pretty excited about the new hit and run offense the Cubs seem to be playing. I'd rather watch that style than a bunch of stiffs standing on base waiting for a home run.

Yup, everything started out normal.....the Yanks are in first.....the BoSox are next to last..... the Mariners are on their way.....Mick is still optimistic...and the Cubbies' fans have visions of sugarplum dancing in their heads.

Unfortunately, there is no Santa Claus, Virginia. :)

JR - better look again. The BoSox are ahead of the Yanks, because they won their game first. It's gonna be tough coming back from that deficit...

And I've never seen a sugurplum, so I don't know how one could start dancing in my head. Maybe I should ask Bob?

Sigh......

Lemmee see now....the Yanks are 1-0.....Boston is 1-0... Baltimore is 1-0.....ergo, their winning percentage is 1000 and they're all in first place.......the other 2 team in their division have a winning percentage of .0000 and they are tied for last place. Now, for the mathematically disadvantaged and Cubs's fans, is it not true that the Yankees are in first place? Is it also not true that the BoSox are <b>next to last</b>?

Did you hit an abutment head-on too, Katie Jr.?

You're right, I now see the error of my ways.

The Red Sox are in first, and the Evil Empire is next to last. Thank you for clearing that up.

Yup, you can put it that way too. I prefer not to. The unbeaten Cubbies are next to last also.

Kinda sounds better that way somehow.....:D

Hey, shouldn't you be mapping out your route for the big inter-timezone extravaganza tomorrow morning?

btw...1 bit of news Chuck missed is that Barry Bonds visited the most laid back, non-judgemental and nauseatingly friendly city in the entire country & was roundly and soundly booed by each and every fan every single time he peeked his head out of the dugout. This is gonna get really ugly when he gets to Philly. And I hear the Mets are moving "flashlight battery day" to coincide with Bonds' visit to Shea.

Oh yeah, and it seems for some reason he's only hitting to the warning track now.

That reminds me, did I mention I thought I saw Ed Hightower at a Cardinal's game last summer? (Or was it Ted Valentine? Hmm...)

Actually I wasn't too disappointed in the Mariners loss on opening day...I was pleasantly surprised by the win yesterday, and by Johjima hitting two homers in his first two games...of course, we've given up 11 hits and 13 hits in our first two games, Guardado looked horrible again, and our two biggest off-season pickups were Everett and Washburn...sigh...gonna be another long summer.

You had the wrong team in boldface so I took the liberty of adjusting your standings table. Otherwise I agree - bring on the playoffs now!!! :p

ChuckElias Thu Apr 06, 2006 07:42am

Most of you probably didn't see it and didn't care to, but the Red Sox/Rangers game was a gem last night. Both starting pitchers pitched really well, for so early in the season. Some nifty defensive plays, and every AB was important, as the final score was 2-1. I was very impressed with Beckett. He could've gotten very frustrated, as the Sox didn't get any offense going for him early, but he didn't.

I'll agree with Mick. Start the playoffs. The Sox are in, the Yankees are out. :D Pretty sure that won't be the case in October. Dan won't even bother to respond to this until the All-Star break. :)

Jurassic Referee Thu Apr 06, 2006 08:20am

I saw part of the BoSox game. Unfortunately, I also saw part of the Yankees game too.

Papelbon sure was impressive. Looks like Keith Foulke and his 7 1/2 mil a year might be getting a lot of late pine time. Gotta kinda admire a manager that would make the decision this early in the season to use what he thinks is his best closer instead of his highest paid one. Of course, the first time that Papelbon blows one- and he will- his sainthood will be null and void.

I can't wait for Wells to re-join the Sox. Build up the ol' team unity.

Sigh...thanks alot o' Juggling One.

I've almost gotten to the point of considering their contributions, combined, to be essentially a 5th starter. If the Cubs get more out them, it's a bonus. If they can get Wade Miller in the rotation, keep Zambrano off the internet, and find a refill on Maddux's "fountain of youth" water bottle, they just might give Houston a good battle for second.

So, in the meantime:

A sad story

At a divorce hearing, the judge asked the 12 year old child if he wanted to live with his mother. "No,"' he said. "Why not?" replied the judge. "She beats me," said the young man. So the judge asked if he would like to live with his father. "No", said the boy. "He beats me too." The judge asked, "Well who do you want to live with?" "The Cubs," said the boy. "The Cubs?" asked the judge. "Why would you want to live with the Cubs?" The boy answered,"Because the Cubs never beat anybody."

Anybody notice that our very own DAN was honored last night during the Oakland A's home game? For some reason, the name "DAN" was patterned into the infield dirt behind second base. I had no idea our buddy had so much influence in the Bay Area.

How bout that St. Louis bullpen, BTW? Ouch.

And, now that I think of it, how 'bout that Boston bullpen?!!? Yeeee-ha!

If you want to talk bullpens, you have to talk Mariners...yuck! What a joke their bullpen is - again!

That story is <B>so</B> last century.

(Come to think of it, so is their last World Series appearance.)

Sigh...

But, on the bright side, I have a broom propped up next to my desk for the benefit of those Cardinal fans in my office. Hey, I know it's barely April; I just need to get my digs in whenever I can.

tjones1 Mon Apr 10, 2006 12:11pm

I know there's no crying in baseball, nor are there excuses.

BUT (which of course means, void everything I just previously stated :D) the Cards bullpen was horrible, that's all that I really have to say about that. (A little Forrest Gump plug there.)

I guess the Champs are better than the Royals, but are the Champs better than the Rangers ?
On the plus side, the Tigers haven't had an error in 7 games.

All this bullpen talk and no mention of the Braves? Once again they have decided to give the season a go without a real closer. Not sure that they have a set up man either... Or anyone who can get someone out!

PS Their starters have exactly ZERO wins thusfar.

PPS Chipper is on the DL already.

No idea why this is in a Philly paper: http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/sports/14297194.htm

He says he took his inspiration from Tony Kornheiser, who wrote at the time, that it was the peak of his life and everything afterwards would simply be nostalgia. Tony recently spoke with Maier and congratulated him.

Of course, Atlanta gets six innings of one hit ball out of starter John Thomson, but still can't win the game due to that mess they call a bullpen.

I liked Saturday's game better...and as for today's game, if the first base umpire doesn't blow the call when Sexson tags the runner, we would've had you again...we'll see what Meche can do against the Sox tomorrow.

I didn't get to see it, as my family was traveling to visit my dad. But I'm most really impressed with the pitching lines for the Sox. Becket throws 7 innings with 1 earned run, Timlin pitches a 1-hit 8th, and Papelbon gets another save. That's how it's supposed to work!

And in other news, Mariano blows a save in April, and it's not even against the Sox!

Oh well...I thought it was an easy call, but the ump didn't, so that's the way it goes. I will say this - Papelbon is a stud! In his post-game interview yesterday, after a 1-2-3 9th inning where he threw something like 11 pitches, he talked about how 'lucky" he was to get out of the inning - M's had two long flies off him, but not even close to the wall - and how he was going to have to work harder in the future. Pretty impressive!

M&M Guy Thu Apr 20, 2006 11:49am

An intersting note to last night's Cubs-Dodgers game:

The pitching matchup was Penny/Marshall.

In the press box was David "Squiggy" Lander, who appeared in "Laverne and Shirley", who is also an associate scout for the Seattle Mariners.

Life can be strange sometimes.

Wakefield is off to a terrible start this year. He's been with the Sox longer than anybody else currently on the club, I think. It's early, so he's got plenty of time to turn it around, but hitters are just teeing off on him. Sox have lost 5 games (only the Mets have fewer losses), and Wakefield has been charged with 3 of of the losses. Not good times for Wake.

This upcoming series with the Jays should be a good one.

ChuckElias Fri Apr 21, 2006 06:22am

I forgot to mention, although I know it's a sore spot. . . The Cubbies are in a world of hurt now that Derek Lee is out, too. What a funky play to get banged up on. It looked like he just forgot where he was. He wasn't even trying to make a play, he was just standing there on the base.

Nomar's coming back, tho. Hope he stays healthy for a few games.

Thanks alot Chuck. I was starting to get the hang of rocky's memory-blocking techniques down, but you gotta go and ruin it.

M&M Guy Fri Apr 21, 2006 08:45am

Umm...ok, I'm fine now.

Btw, anyone notice the Mets "milestone" homeruns? Julio Franco is the oldest player to ever hit a home run (isn't he eligible for Medicare?), and Kaz Matsui getting a home run in his first at-bat of the season, <B>in his third straight season</B>.

And I'm ready for the big money myself. At this point in the season, Mr. M&M Guy has as many home runs as Barry Bonds and Manny Ramirez <B>combined</B>. And, I can guarantee I'll be on the DL less than Prior or Wood...

...oh, no, (snif...) here comes those feelings again...

The BoSox aren't any games behind. They are in second place in their division though.

If it'll make you feel any better, note that the MLB standings also show that your beloved Cubbies are all the way up to <b>FOURTH</b> place in their division as of today, even though the fifth-place Brewers have won more games. The good news also is that Prior and Woods are tenatively expected to be back for the playoffs in October now, if the Cubs do happen to make them.

Semantics. They're tied for first. At least until about 5 hrs. from now.

Oh, yea, btw - the vaunted Cubs pitching staff consisting of Prior, Wood and Zambrano have combined for <B>0</B> wins so far this season. And how's their overall record compared to the Evil Empire?

On a side note, there was an interesting article in my local paper last week listing the starting pitchers the Mariners have had to face this year. Yikes - I'm surprised they've won more than 2 or 3 games...

I must say I am quite impressed by by the hospitality of the Fenway crowd. As the game started they were chanting "Yankees luck!"

It seems to be working, end of 4 NY up 3-1.

Tied up, 3-3. Guess Guidry's advice didn't help. He doesn't look at all like I remember him from his pitching days. My memory's just shot, probably.

Well......I think that David Ortiz shoulda observed the <b>Day Without Immigrants</b>.

Not fair....
