The PC Foul signal is the same signal for a "illegal screen" call. At least at the NCAA Rules level. I am under the impression (please correct me on this) that canuckrefguy's area uses NCAA Rules and Mechanics. The PC Foul signal (different signals but same kind of usage) is the exact same signal as the "Team Control" Foul signal. So Dan had it right.

Peace
My bad. Read it quick. Read it wrong.

I have been told by evaluators at a camp that I should never say "that way" or "going down." I've also been told by a supervisor to say "illegal screen" instead of just saying "illegal." I personally don't like "that way" but ultimately you have to please your supervisor/evaluator.

As far as the signal goes this has always fascinated me on the high school and college level. What you do to break in is different from what you do once you are there. How many times do you see an official use the PC/TC signal on TV? I would say a high number would be 50%. A strong point towards the other end of the court is what I normally see and it gets the point across.

I think the 50% figure is MUCH less than that. I can't even remember seeing it in the NCAA tournament last year on TV.

Just as you do, I will sometime verbalize "Offense!" I don't know that there's a mechanic to verbalize or not but for me, it makes it clear that we are going "that way."
I say, "That way" a lot.

It is the college official's mechanic to do so. So that might be why you see that from them.

Also, I do not think everyone agrees that this is not a good thing. I am sure just like anything there are evaluators that have an issue with it, but there are probably some that teach it.

Peace

That is not true. All fouls by the team in control is "team control" foul (and if the team has a throw-in). But you still can have a player control foul if an airborne shooter has not returned to the floor yet. The only thing is that the signal is the same for both, no matter which foul (team or player control) is called.
My bad. You're right---women have a PC foul, a common foul by a player in control or an airborne shooter. I was caught up when I looked at the "signals" section of the NCAA rulebook, where the "punch fist" signal is marked as being for team control fouls (women only), but the "hand behind head" signal is maked as being either PC or team control (men only). Hence my confusion.

Actually since a PC foul by an NCAA woman airborne shooter occurs when there's no team control, it is not a team control foul, so technically the ruleboook has no signal for it!

Recap

Ok, just so we have a little "closure" on this topic, I think we've decided that:

a) "Offense!" is acceptable;
b) "Illegal!" or "Illegal screen!" is also acceptable, and probably more widespread; and
c) only losers use the phrase "That way!".

Does that cover it?

Your verbal should be whatever your supervisor wants it to be.

Where appropriate, I will verbalize "Illegal screen", combined with a directional point, but for rebounding fouls by the shooting team, I sometimes will say, "That way", combined with a directional point.

Chuck,
I've got so many openings in my schedule that I may not get outa breath this year. Lotsa refs U.P. here. Or at least lotsa better refs U.P. here.

Hmm, ...maybe I should start saying "Gentlemen", "Mes dames", "sirs", "my friends".
I already changed my mouthwash and my underwear.
