Not necessarily - when giving an explaination give the rule. But of course then you have to 'know' the rules. By giving the rule, you clairify why you called the balk.

Conversation:

Coach: "why you have a balk blue"

Blue: "according to rule X.xxa the pitcher must .... or cannot ... "

End of conversation.

Now giving an explaination off the top of your head, i agree, will only make it worse.

I disagree with quoting the rule number (even if you know it).

Five words or less (fewer, for the grammar Nazis)

Use rule book terms.

Feinted to first.

Start and stop.

No step.

Stepped home (when threw to first).

Good point Bob, I agree, in my example got a little carried away.

Thanks for a clarification, but totally agree, using words that are in the rule book or terms such as are such an advantage in any conversation whether it is a balk or any other play etc.,
