Sure... "Wow" indicates the poster is somewhat astonished by the play.

You're not as funny as you think you are.....

I'm looking for why it's a good/bad call.... but I think you already knew that...

I didn't get that from your post at all. I took it as you were asking what "wow" stood for -- as if it were some sort of TLA.

When a batter swings and doesn't hit the ball (with the bat), it's a strike.

When a batter is hit by a pitch, the ball is dead.

Combining those two rules on this play gives third strike, dead ball, game over.

The lack of response by Sam Holbrook makes the play confusing. From the clip he doesn't signal anything. He must have appealed the swing and then called him out.

Yes - that's exactly what happened... you can see the beginning of him pointing to his partner in a couple of the angles.

Thank you... I guess I was looking for more from the op...as to whether it was a bad call, good call and why not. I was curious and her response to the original post told me nothing.

Sorry - my psychic abilities to discern that your question was actually NOT about the post you quoted, but about a different post, must have failed me.

Sure ... roll your eyes all you like - you changing of the meaning of your question by quoting an irrelevant post is obviously my fault.

(Seriously, even not being a baseball umpire, (and admitting the TH's are not always the best source of info) - your announcers explain the call relatively well for once... what is your question then?)

Okay:
  1. You are on a baseball umpire's forum - not a baseball fan's forum.
  2. There are 2 strikes on the batter and he is hit in the hand while swinging at the pitch - he does not get to go to 1st.
  3. The home plate umpire ruled that that batter did swing, so having 2 strikes already, the batter is out.
  4. This is a very rare play to happen at the end of the game.
Did that clear up things?

What digs? I broke it down for you and you have a problem with that? It just goes to show that fans are dumber than coaches.

Begone!

You could be more upfront and tell us you're a softball umpire. (That's an assumption based on the majority of your posts.)

I would have thought this rule was the same in (most) softball codes.
