Advantageous 4th out in D-backs game
LAD/D-backs...had an advantageous 4th out play today, from what I'm reading, D-backs didn't appeal and it cost them a run.
Apparently the video on MLB.com doesn't tell us much...anybody see it?

R3 (Dodger Andre Ethier), R2 (Juan Pierre), 1 out. Line drive headed for center snagged by pitcher D'back Dan Haren. Runners running. Pitcher throws to F4 (Felipe Lopez), who instead of tagging base casually walks up to R2 and tags him, but not until after R3 crosses the plate without tagging up. D'backs leave the field, blowing their chance for an advantageous fourth out. OC talks to PU Larry Vanover, who says yeah, that's a run.
Best part was that R2 Juan Pierre was looking homeward, as if to make sure that R3 tagged home before F4 Felipe Lopez tagged him. Here's the mlb.com link, with video. Dodgers get run on 'fourth-out rule' | MLB.com: News Last edited by Paul L; Mon Apr 13, 2009 at 09:46pm. |

I don't think that's what he was doing. I think that was his "Aw, dang" look. I'm fairly confident that at most 4 people on that field knew that the run was going to score.

[Insert 20-20 hindsight and armchair umpire comments here] PU is supposed to rule on the time play immediately after the 3rd out is recorded. From the mlb.com article, it appears that the ruling on the time play wasn't issued until well after AZ had lost its right to appeal the advantageous 4th out.

Scorebook?
So how do you score it in the book if the appeal is made and the runner at third called out? Does the appeal actually become the third out thus making the 'run-down' tag an event that happened after the inning was over and not recorded?

Not sure how you score it...Welcome to the board! Just so you know, be prepared to deal w/ a variety of comments if you ask scoring questions on here.
Again, welcome to the board!

2nd out F-1, 3rd out PO@3, 4th out we only get three, go back to the 3rd out and forget about it. Of course I never officially scored a MLB ball game either. |

I'm not an official scorer, but such 4th outs are called superseding because they replace a 3rd out and become said "3rd out." (Play Twilight Zone music.)
