BOT - coach refuses to..

hi,
following situation :
batting out of turn/order, count 1:1.
defensive coach appeals that the improper batter's up.
umpire walks over to the offensive coach and tells him about the improper batter. instead of changeging the batter (improper batter -> proper batter) the O.Coach says "i'll let the improper batter hit, you cannot dictate me, to change the batter !".

can he ? or can't he ?

Once the BOO has been properly called to the umpire's attention, the penalty must be enforced. Rule reference? Penalty for BOO. Plus, the offensive coach is a dufus (for lack of a better word). IMHO this is a TWP.

Why would he do this? There is no possible advantage to be gained.

My first thought was that this is not like directing a pitcher to remove a wristband or a fielder to play in fair territory, so I'd let the improper batter continue batting and then deal with whatever appeal ensues. After all, the OBR book says, "The proper batter may take his place in the batter's box. . . ."

However, the book also says that when the defense appeals an improper batter who has not completed his time at bat, "Abel replaces Baker" and assumes the count. Therefore, I would order the proper batter into the box and prepare to toss a coach who is obviously looking for trouble.

Once the BOO has been properly called to the umpire's attention, the penalty must be enforced.

What penalty?

Did you really have this happen to you or are you just bored?

Okay, let's say that the manager is a real moron and this really happened....

Umpire: "Coach, the opposing coach has appealed BOO (we don't call it BOT) so get me the proper batter up here or the game will not continue!"

Coach still argues, dump him - he's a total jerk anyway and would do his team a better service by not being there anymore.

Still, after more than a half century in the game, I have never run into a coach that was this much of an idiot - yet!

My read is that Bruno works in a foreign country. Two possibilities I can think of:

1. Foreign coach is unfamiliar with the rules but understands the universal trait of coaches to act like a$$es.

2. Coach is an American who is unfamiliar with rules and thinks he can bluff or bully a foreign umpire, thus demonstrating the universal trait of coaches to act like a$$es.

Either way, the coach is being a coach.

What penalty?
Replacing the improper batter with the proper batter.

You know - DC wasn't real smart to mention the BOO DURING the at bat either.

I have had many a youth coach do this. Then at the half inning, they always come out wondering if they should have waited! On the other side of the coin, I've never had a Scholastic Coach do this.

I've had a youth coach ask me when he should tell me that the current batter is batting out of order. My reply, "You just did. Time!"
