Darker color pants...

So are most people (umps and manufacturers) switching to the darker colored pants that Gerry Davis sells, opposed to the Heather grey?

They seem to look nicer.

That's kinda weird. The grey pants would be cooler then the dark, but maybe they can get them cheaper.

The darker grey were first offered to amateurs by Honigs. Our association switched to them three years ago.

Hehehehe

They certainly ARE NOT cheaper. Poly/Wool Blend is more expensive.

In our area of the world we have guys that work both high school and college. Since they do not want to carry extra pants (i.e. buy extra pants) they wear the poly/wool (darker pant) when working with high school only umpires (heather grey).

At the state tournament this year the Executive Director of the OSAA (Oregon School Activities Association) commented that umpires in the same game had different colored slacks.

He wants this to end.

BTW, not all umpires worry about wearing the most inexpensive items.

Regards,

So what makes the darker pants the choice for college umpires in your area? I only know a couple guys who wear the darker pants.

Then there are the umpires who umpire not only because they enjoy it, but to help pay the bills and would rather not buy the "extra" if they don't have to. All I've seen in my area is the heather so I'm not too worried at this point.

Personally, I find the Davis pants to hide the dirt a bit better and less prone to turning that fading pink/purple hue when left to the sun's rays too long. I also think the so-called "polo blue" shirts go better w/ the darker pants than the lighter ones.

We are not allowed to wear the new pants when doing FED games. Our association was very adamant about this. They said that the NCAA guys will just have to carry 2 different colors, like it or not.

Well i hadn't thought about them getting dirty like that. I guess the darker color would be better for that reason.

I'm referring to dusty fields. No pants I know will hide the messy, wet mud that just cakes everywhere.

In our assoc. some guys have the dark GD pants, some have the Honigs and some have the heather. The dark gray look better and don't fade. Personnaly I have the Honigs dark and heather. I call my partner the night before HS games and we get together on color pants and shirts, or carry I both color pants and shirts. For NCAA we always wear the dark gray. As I said they look better but they are much hotter. During summer games I wear heather. They are much cooler.
Today: Double header men's league, 99 degrees, HEATHER.

This is considered a "transition year" in the Minors. Some crews carry both the dark grey and the heather. Next year the darker pant will be required. Honigs is the official supplier.

Buckeye, I don't find the GD pants any hotter, and I've worn both in hot and humid temps.

Garth, as nice as the Honigs ones are, I find them a tad more troublesome to upkeep. Most of my peers find they have to iron them once a week.

I've seen the Davis pants. They remind me of dark grey Dickey's for umpires. They seem to lack a.....dressy quality...

I may try some next season, though. At the D3 conference tourney I worked most of the umpires wore them. Course most of them had a semidirect connection to GDS and I rarely purchase from them.
