Should I have tossed him?

In a high school age summer game I'm doing the plate. The catcher asks me if the batter is too far back in the box(no batters box) I use the batter's bat, to measure and draw a back line with my foot.
The 1b coach yells down from the coaches box "why dont you draw a line on his chest". I stare at him 5-10 sec (mask on) I later thought I should have sent him home. Any other thoughts???
