Oh, we should have known it was one of Carl's psychedelic mechanics. I have read his theory on coverages, such as the PU calling the play at first base. Interesting reading, to be sure. As far as the practicality of putting these mechanics to use, the jury in my mind is still out.

Pfft. About as much chance around here of trying that as there is of wearing a HSM. Ain't gonna happen.

I've done it. Twice! Once in a little league game, I was center field, and this kid pops one that's going out right over me. I figured, what the heck, throw the glove up and see what happens. I hit it and the ball falls to my side, about 10 feet away, and I throw the ball into the infield and they tag the guy who's standing just 5 feet from second, stunned! I don't recall how long it took them to award him a home run, but it seemed like a long time. I had the miserable feeling that I was going to get in serious trouble, too, but nothing happened.

The other time, my church league softball team was practicing and we were jacking around. Same deal though -- fly pop up and I nailed it with my glove, probably about 15 feet or so in the air.
