Thumbs up Wooden Bat Tourney

One of the local varsity teams in Southern Ohio hosts a wooden bat tournament each year as a fundraiser and to honor an individual who was influential in area sports. I usually work two games in this event about every other year. Some observations from this past Saturday.

In two varsity games:
1. Two (2) broken bats.
2. Three extra base hits.
3. Fourteen (14) bunts.
4. A game high of 6 hits.
5. Several of the "hits" were weak grounders that were beat out in the infield.
6. Final scores: 10-0 (multiple errors, not hits); 6-5; 6-4; and 2-0 in the championship game with the winning team getting only 2 hits.

As noted in a thread earlier, the sound is exquisite ( unless you were
jammed

From my experience, I can understand why the hitting was light.

The Wood Bat Tourneys that I have worked have a bunch of generic bats where one size fits all.
Most have that *medium* size handle, and maybe none are thick handled or thin handled, unless a few players special ordered and brought them to the game.

Illinois is doing a test study with wood bats in HS games this season. there are 4 or 5 conferences that were supplied with bats by the the IHSA. Each bat has a barcode and is tracked by the coaches.

Here is a link to an article about it

I have not been in a local sporting goods store that has wooden bats in a very long time.
