NCAA Checked Swing - Curious
2006 & 7 NCAA rule book:
Checked Swing A checked swing shall be called a strike if the barrel head of the bat crosses the front edge of home plate or the batter’s front hip. How long has it been there? Does it really get called that way?

Ump29, do you mean if the bat 'enters' the strike zone, or passes through it and reaches the other side of the plate?
Regardless, we call a strike if the batter attempted to hit the pitch, not in relation to where the bat is in the strike zone. All the different factors people use are just visual aids to assist us.
