NCAA Checked Swing - Curious
2006 & 7 NCAA rule book:
Checked Swing A checked swing shall be called a strike if the barrel head of the bat crosses the front edge of home plate or the batter’s front hip. How long has it been there? Does it really get called that way? |

FED also has a similar definition- in the case book somewhere.

10.1.3 SITUATION: B1, attempting to check his swing at a pitch, carries thebarrel of the bat past his body. RULING: The umpire should note whether or not the batter's movement carried the barrel of the bat past the batter's body in an attempt to strike the ball. |
I look to see if bat crossed into strike zone. Was taught this when I started 17 yr ago and still follow this . Also teach this now to new umps.

Ump29, do you mean if the bat 'enters' the strike zone, or passes through it and reaches the other side of the plate?
Regardless, we call a strike if the batter attempted to hit the pitch, not in relation to where the bat is in the strike zone. All the different factors people use are just visual aids to assist us. |

We teach to judge whether or not the batter offered at the pitch as the proschools teach. |
