NCAA Checked Swing - Curious

2006 & 7 NCAA rule book:

Checked Swing
A checked swing shall be called a strike if the barrel head of the bat crosses the front edge of home plate or the batter’s front hip.

How long has it been there?

Does it really get called that way?

Longer than I care to remember.

Not in my neck of the woods. It is the offer that counts. NCAA just defined the process with the rule. What they did caused more problems than it prevented.

RULING: The umpire should note whether or not the batter's movement carried the barrel of the bat past the batter's body in an attempt to strike the ball.

Ump29, do you mean if the bat 'enters' the strike zone, or passes through it and reaches the other side of the plate?

Regardless, we call a strike if the batter attempted to hit the pitch, not in relation to where the bat is in the strike zone. All the different factors people use are just visual aids to assist us.

Really? A bat could cross into the strike zone and still be angled back towards the catcher and have no indication of "offer" what so ever.

We teach to judge whether or not the batter offered at the pitch as the proschools teach.
