Warm-up Protocols -- NHFS
What is the protocol for warm-up's in your area? We are proposing a rule to NHFS to give a team exclusive use of the playing area. In our league, we did this on a trial basis this fall, and it made all the teams safer. Normally, one team will have the use of the court, but the other team will shuttle on the back-line or side-line. This results in numerous balls that are shanked into the court causing a possible safety hazard.
In other rule sets --i.e. NCAA and USAV, the one team has exclusive use of the court, and the other team must be off of the playing area or at the team bench. |

In AZ we have a 15 minute warm up period.
3 min shared - each team on their own side of the net 6 min Visitor on the court 6 min Home on the court The team that is not on the court is allowed to shuttle in an area off the court. In my experience, balls shanked onto the court have not been an issue.

In Southern California we have a 20 minute warm-up protocol which starts after the Coaches/Captains meeting.Timer puts 20:00 minutes on the board and stops it at 15 and 9.They then let it go the rest of the way.
5 minutes shared court 6 minutes serving team 6 minutes receiving team 3 minutes court cleared

Our standard warm-up is 20 minutes starting at the captains/coaches meeting.
6 min shared 7 min visitor 7 min home The problem we have is that our smaller schools have minimal clearance around the playing court, so when a team is shuttling, a shanked ball is usually at a hitter's feet unless shomeone is exceptionally quick at intercepting the ball. In the larger gyms, we don't have an issue, but it is easier to make all schools have to follow the rule. In fact, the smallest school gym has been ruled unsafe for basketball, and they forfeit all of their home basketball games. This gym has serving. Either the shuttling team or the team on the floor have to contend with errant balls. Also, just received a notice from the NCAA rules interpreter, that officials aren't enforcing the exclusive use of court protocol. Last edited by pavbref; Mon Nov 04, 2013 at 06:03pm. |
