Line judges

Just curious if anybody uses line judges at the HS level. We don't use them here. Is that the norm?

From what I understand, most places use line judges for HS. There are, unfortunately, some exceptions.

Ohio always uses line judges for JV and V, and the expectation is that at least for varsity matches the line judges will be adults and not players or other students.

I have worked at just 1 school (a small parochial school) where the line judges are students.

Pish, my daughter is 15 and is a competent LJ for D-I and D-II.

Here in Kansas they use two LJ's per match, heaven help you if you have to work without them.

In AZ, the home team is required to provide LJs for each HS match.

What usually ends up happening is that two Varsity players LJ the Freshman match, two frosh players LJ the JV match, and two JV players LJ the Varsity match. That is for regular season.

Once the playoffs start, LJs are assigned by the state association, usually newer officials.

I'll let you know after my first matches on Tuesday if Utah uses them. But I think they do.

Michigan has it required. Home team is responsible for providing them. No line judges, no match.

With that said, it frustrates me that they put players on the lines. Some are good, but most barely pay attention or don't want to even be there, and it shows. The best line judges end up doing the JV matches (varsity players) and the worst (JV players) call the lines during the varsity matches - when they're needed the most.

I much prefer the home team to pay a specific pair of trained line judges that will do their games the whole year. Those kind of people are consistent and teachable!
