OK... once again, I'll have to unlearn something I thought I knew from playing that other diamond sport and re-learn the rule correctly

The key is that it is sharply & directly to the glove/hand before touching any other part of the catcher or his/her equipment and that the catcher eventually gains possession of the ball.
