Out for leaving base during timeout?

I'm baseball only. Read this about an NCAA game:

Freshman cleanup hitter Morales then whapped a stand-up double to the left field wall, scoring Nash to even the score, but Morales made a costly mistake by walking off the bag during a timeout.

“When the defense calls timeout, then the runners have to stay at their bases,” Libby said of the rule.

“The runners can come talk to me if their coach calls timeout to talk to their team. Then I’m allowed to talk to my team.

When it’s their players, you can’t leave the base.”

Perused the NCAA rule book online and it looks like there is a clause that you can't leave base for any reson. Is that what the out is called for?

Not sure what the out was called for in that case, but if the catcher calls time and runs out to chat with the pitcher baserunners are not allowed to leave the vicinity of their bases without being charged with an offensive conference.

Perhaps there was no request for time, and the writer is only assuming. If the pitcher has the ball in the circle, and the runner wanders off base, she's out if the ball is live. I bet at least half the time in my experience when the catcher goes to talk to the pitcher, they don't ask me for time. Ball is live.

Go here: Live Events

You have to select the ondemand tab and the select watch for the thursday 3pm game between St. Edward and TAMU. Go to 1:20:44. second batter of bottom 6.

Morales doubles, PU calls time, R2 leaves 2B to talk with coach, U1 calls her out. Announcers ask some questions and all agree that you can't leave the base during other sides timeout and the penalty is an out. If it's a myth, this NCAA conference has bought into it big time, Umps, Coaches and announcers.

Without the video:

Unless the defense requested and was granted time, it is an LBR violation. AFAWK, this may have been a planned play and the umpire may have been notified.

Seeing the video:

Unfortunately, the PU was requested for and approved a suspension of play, so there is no LBR violation. Find it hard to believe there was no argument.

PU called time after being asked by catcher. Maybe U1 didn't see it.

There was no argument because apparently in this neck of the woods everybody thinks that is the rule. Coach stated so in news article, announcers conferred with somebody on the audio and said the same thing. Surprising for NCAA.

Just in case anyone was wondering:

6-11-4-4 When a defensive player requests time to speak to one or more defensive players, base runners may not abandon the vicinity of their bases without it being a charged offensive conference.

Notes:

1. If either team is charged with a conference, base runners are no longer restricted to the area near their bases.

2. If base runners leave the vicinity of their bases, it is a charged offensive conference, and if the team has already used its charged conference in the inning, the head coach is ejected.

6.11.2.2 was changed this year so maybe it was an out last year.

If I remeber correctly, the change was adding the description "vicinity of the base".
The original rule said they may not leave the base.

This from the game report: "TAMIU's momentum was stalled however, as Morales was called out for leaving her base during an unofficial timeout. "

If the catcher turns and talks to the PU and the PU gives the time signal what kind of a timeout is that? What is an unofficial timeout?
