Out for leaving base during timeout?
I'm baseball only. Read this about an NCAA game:
Freshman cleanup hitter Morales then whapped a stand-up double to the left field wall, scoring Nash to even the score, but Morales made a costly mistake by walking off the bag during a timeout. “When the defense calls timeout, then the runners have to stay at their bases,” Libby said of the rule. “The runners can come talk to me if their coach calls timeout to talk to their team. Then I’m allowed to talk to my team. When it’s their players, you can’t leave the base.” Perused the NCAA rule book online and it looks like there is a clause that you can't leave base for any reson. Is that what the out is called for? |

Perhaps there was no request for time, and the writer is only assuming. If the pitcher has the ball in the circle, and the runner wanders off base, she's out if the ball is live. I bet at least half the time in my experience when the catcher goes to talk to the pitcher, they don't ask me for time. Ball is live.

You have to select the ondemand tab and the select watch for the thursday 3pm game between St. Edward and TAMU. Go to 1:20:44. second batter of bottom 6. Morales doubles, PU calls time, R2 leaves 2B to talk with coach, U1 calls her out. Announcers ask some questions and all agree that you can't leave the base during other sides timeout and the penalty is an out. If it's a myth, this NCAA conference has bought into it big time, Umps, Coaches and announcers. Last edited by umpjim; Fri Apr 27, 2012 at 01:00pm. |

Unless the defense requested and was granted time, it is an LBR violation. AFAWK, this may have been a planned play and the umpire may have been notified. Seeing the video: Unfortunately, the PU was requested for and approved a suspension of play, so there is no LBR violation. Find it hard to believe there was no argument.

Isn't Cat Osterman the St. Edward's coach

Yes she is the assistant coach, Lindsay Gardner is the head coach. I find it hard to believe this is what was called and accepted.

It appears the announcers and the TAMIU coach and the game report writer believe that this is the rule. As far as the umpires, maybe U1 did not see the PU grant time. Otherwise, that's how they called it.

See, I don't see that as applying here. To me, OOO (over-officiating) is looking for boogers to apply a rule and penalty enforcement to, when good game management would have the vast majority of officials handling the booger a different way.
If this report is accurate, there was a violation expected to be enforced with a prescribed penalty (charged offensive conference); but this umpire/crew apparently made up its own penalty (runner is out).
