Didn't say the ball was dead...yet. Maybe you didn't call time, but the fielder could have requested it and, if he did, you could have granted it.

In this case, what would be the advantage of the dead ball appeal? Most times there is, but I don't see it here.

Being a live ball appeal, the one person paying attention and knowing what to do made the appeal; any fielder with the ball, touching the base.

If asked as a dead ball appeal, it would have to be someone else, since an outfielder cannot do it. Why add the extra level here?
